Sydney FC and Jeonbuk Motors played a thrilling AFC Cup 2024 quarter-final match at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on March 13th. The game, officiated by Al-Marri, Abdulla Ali from Qatar, ended in a vibrant 4-2 victory for the home side.
Jeonbuk Motors took the lead with two early goals from Jeon Jin-Woo, the first at 35 minutes assisted by Kim Jin-gyu, and the second before halftime, creating a seemingly unassailable lead. However, Sydney FC showed a great capacity for reaction. A. Grant scored at 59 minutes, assisted by R. Grant, rekindling the home team’s hopes. P. Klimala extended the lead at 71 minutes with an assist from J. Courtney-Perkins. A penalty converted by Douglas Costa at 81 minutes sealed the scoreline, despite an initial goal by Klimala being disallowed for offside at the 8th minute. The match was marked by yellow cards to A. Grant and A. Caceres in the first half, and R. Grant in the second, totaling 3 cautions for Sydney. Jeonbuk committed 15 fouls compared to Sydney’s 10. In terms of possession, Jeonbuk dominated with 54%, while Sydney registered 46%. Despite the visitors’ possession advantage, Sydney was more effective in front of goal, generating 11 shots (9 on target) against Jeonbuk’s 10 (7 on target).
