Esteghlal FC suffered a thrilling defeat against Al-Ahli Jeddah in the sixth matchday of the 2024 AFC Champions League group stage, played at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah. The match, refereed by Ning Ma from China, ended with a score of 2-3.
Esteghlal took the lead in the 42nd minute with a goal from Raphael Silva, assisted by Moradmand. However, Al-Ahli equalized before halftime thanks to a penalty converted by I. Toney (45′). Esteghlal regained the lead at the start of the second half with a goal from M. Eslami (51′). The second half was marked by tension, with several yellow cards for both teams, including a red card for Esteghlal’s M. Eslami in the 81st minute. Despite the expulsion, Al-Ahli Jeddah managed to turn the game around with a second penalty scored by I. Toney in the 83rd minute. Despite the final attempts, the result did not change.
Al-Ahli Jeddah dominated possession with 68%, shooting 19 times (8 on target), while Esteghlal only managed 5 shots (3 on target). The difference in possession and scoring opportunities reflected the Saudi team’s control of the game.
