Universidad Católica secures a hard-fought victory against O’Higgins
Rancagua, Chile – Universidad Católica overcame O’Higgins with a 2-0 victory in an exciting and controversial match at Estadio El Teniente. The match, corresponding to the 27th round of the Chilean First Division, was marked by a second half with several yellow cards and the expulsion of an O’Higgins player.
The first half started with a calm pace, until in the 21st minute, Bruno Ampuero opened the scoring for the UC with a precise shot after an assist from F. Zuqui. The goal woke up O’Higgins, who sought the equalizer with intensity, but couldn’t find the formula to overcome the Catholic defense.
The second half started with an early goal from Jader (minute 47) after a precise pass from Zuqui. From that moment on, U. Católica controlled the match, but O’Higgins didn’t give up and looked to score.
Controversy arrived in the 87th minute when Víctor Fernández of O’Higgins received his second yellow card, resulting in his expulsion. In the final minutes, the match became more intense, with O’Higgins trying to score with one less player and U. Católica defending with order and determination.
The referee, Gaston Philippe, had to show several yellow cards to players from both teams. In total, O’Higgins accumulated 4 yellows and 1 red, while the UC received 2 yellows.
The victory leaves Universidad Católica with 44 points in the standings, while O’Higgins remains with 37 points.
