Independiente Medellín Beats Palestino in a Vibrant Match
Independiente Medellín secured a resounding 4-0 victory over Palestino in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana Round of 16. The match, played at the Estadio Hernán Ramírez Villegas in Pereira, was marked by the Colombian team’s efficiency, who made the most of their chances.
The first goal arrived in the 29th minute when Iván Roman scored an own goal after a cross from L. Sandoval. The lead was extended in the 42nd minute when Jhonatan Alvarado finished with quality after a good collective play.
In the second half, Leonardo Chaverra extended the lead from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, after a foul on Bryan Perlaza. Perlaza himself, in turn, was responsible for closing the scoring in the 67th minute with a left-footed goal.
Independiente Medellín dominated possession (53%) and created more scoring opportunities (14 shots, 9 on target), standing out for their offensive play and their effectiveness in finishing. Palestino, for their part, tried to react but couldn’t find a way to reduce the deficit.
The match was marked by yellow cards. Iván Roman received the first for Palestino in the 34th minute, while Mauricio Dávila Carvajal saw the second for the same team in the 65th minute.
The victory puts Independiente Medellín in a privileged position for the return leg. Palestino will have to overturn an adverse result next week if they want to stay alive in the tournament.
