Athletic Club vs Atlético Madrid: Correa’s late goal seals a win for the visitors
Athletic Club and Atlético Madrid locked horns at San Mamés Barria in Bilbao on Saturday, with a late goal from Ángel Correa securing a 1-0 victory for the away side.
The encounter began with Athletic Club collecting a series of yellow cards. Nico Williams was the first to receive a caution in the 15th minute, followed by Yeray Alvarez in the 34th and Oihan Sancet in the 35th. Despite these early bookings, Athletic Club held a greater share of possession (53%) and registered more shots (9 to 8) but could only manage one shot on target compared to Atlético Madrid’s single shot on target.
The first half concluded without a goal, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances.
Athletic Club thought they had taken the lead early in the second half when Nico Williams found the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed by VAR for offside.
In the latter stages of the game, Atlético Madrid brought on Rodrigo Riquelme, Alexander Sørloth, and Rodrigo De Paul, and the changes proved effective. Sørloth set up Correa who slotted the ball past the helpless Athletic Club goalkeeper in the 90th minute.
The victory lifts Atlético Madrid in the table, while Athletic Club will be disappointed to have lost at home despite a decent performance.
