Late Ward Goal Earns Derby Draw at The Hawthorns
West Bromwich, England – West Brom and Derby County played out a draw in a League Cup first-round match at The Hawthorns. The game, officiated by Thomas Kirk, was marked by physical play, reflected in the numerous yellow cards shown, three to Derby and one to West Brom.
The first half remained goalless, with West Brom dominating possession (55%) and creating more scoring opportunities (20 total shots compared to Derby’s 4). However, Derby’s defense stood firm, preventing the home side from opening the scoring.
The second half saw increased intensity. In the 67th minute, A. Heggebo, assisted by I. Price, broke the deadlock, putting West Brom in the lead. It seemed the game was headed for a home victory, but in the 90th minute, J. Ward, unassisted, scored a crucial goal for Derby, sealing the draw and sending the game to a possible penalty shootout. West Brom recorded 6 shots on target compared to Derby’s 1.
Despite dominating possession and creating numerous chances, West Brom failed to capitalize on their advantage, while Derby, with fewer opportunities, managed to snatch a valuable point in the final minute.
