United States Edges Out Guatemala in Tense Gold Cup Semifinal
St. Louis, July 2, 2025 – In a closely contested match held at Energizer Park in St. Louis, the United States prevailed over Guatemala in the semi-finals of the 2025 Gold Cup. The game, officiated by Jamaican referee Oshane Nation, ended with a score that reflected the intensity of the play.
The United States took an early lead thanks to a brace from D. Luna, scoring in the 4th and 15th minutes with assists from an unidentified player and M. Tillman respectively. However, Guatemala did not give up and fought to get back into the game.
The match was marked by high intensity and several cautions. For the United States, C. Richards, D. Luna, and L. de la Torre received yellow cards in the 45th, 51st, and 55th minutes respectively, highlighting the aggression in the American midfield. M. Freese was also cautioned in the 77th minute. Despite Guatemalan pressure, the United States managed to maintain their lead until the 80th minute, when O. Escobar scored for Guatemala with an assist from A. Ordonez, bringing the score to a tight 2-1.
