United States Defeats Costa Rica in CONCACAF Gold Cup Quarterfinals
Minneapolis – In a match held at U.S. Bank Stadium, the United States defeated Costa Rica in the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. The match, officiated by Walter Lopez of Guatemala, saw the United States dominate possession with 64% compared to Costa Rica’s 36%.
Costa Rica opened the scoring early, in the 12th minute, with a penalty converted by F. Calvo. However, the United States responded strongly. In the 37th minute, M. Tillman converted a goal after missing a penalty. D. Luna extended the lead in the 43rd minute, followed by a goal from M. Arfsten in the 47th minute, right at the start of the second half.
Costa Rica attempted to react and managed to score in the 71st minute with a goal from A. Martinez, but it was not enough to change the course of the match. The match was also characterized by physical play, with four yellow cards shown (three for Costa Rica and one for the United States) and a total of 28 fouls (14 per team).
