Palmeiras Dominates Universitario in Lima with a Thrashing Victory
Lima witnessed a resounding victory for Palmeiras over Universitario in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores Round of 16. The match, played at the Estadio Monumental, ended with a clear away win reflecting the superiority shown on the field.
From the start, Palmeiras imposed their rhythm of play. At 7 minutes, Gustavo Gomez opened the score through a penalty. Shortly after, at 12 minutes, J. Lopez extended the lead with a goal after an assist from Vitor Roque. The dominance of the Brazilian team continued, and at the half-hour mark, Vitor Roque scored a goal, with an assist from J. Piquerez, practically sealing the match.
The second half continued in the same vein. Despite having 48% of the possession, Universitario failed to generate real danger in the opponent’s goal, highlighting the defensive solidity of Palmeiras. The sending off of W. Riveros in the 53rd minute further complicated the aspirations of the local team. J. Lopez sealed the rout with another goal in the 78th minute.
Palmeiras controlled 52% of the ball possession and generated a total of 21 shots, of which 8 were on target, demonstrating their offensive effectiveness.
