Universidad Católica defeats Cerro Largo in thrilling encounter
Quito, April 11, 2025 – Universidad Católica defeated Cerro Largo 3-1 in a CONMEBOL Sudamericana group stage match played at Quito’s Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa. The match, officiated by Michael Espinoza from Peru, was marked by the home side’s overwhelming dominance, controlling 70% of the possession.
Católica opened the scoring early with a goal from Agustín Londono in the 19th minute, assisted by G. Anangono. Iván Díaz doubled the lead before halftime (45′), assisted by D. A. Romero Padilla. Cerro Largo pulled one back in the 75th minute through Brian Ferrares, assisted by J. Contrera, but Díaz secured the victory with a late goal in stoppage time (90′).
The match was a tense affair, with a total of six yellow cards shown to players from both teams. Universidad Católica generated 19 shots, 6 of them on target, while Cerro Largo managed only 4 shots, with just one on target. Despite the defeat, Cerro Largo showed grit and fighting spirit. Universidad Católica’s superiority in possession and shots resulted in a deserved victory.
