Shanghai SIPG suffered a dramatic defeat against Ulsan Hyundai FC in the fifth matchday of the 2024 AFC Champions League group stage, played on November 26th at the Ulsan Munsu Football Stadium. Despite a blistering start with two early goals from Miguel Vargas, both assisted by Oscar, Shanghai SIPG was hampered by the red card shown to Li Ang in the 31st minute. Ulsan, dominating possession with 74%, relentlessly pressed. Despite yellow cards to Oscar and other Shanghai players, the home team eventually pulled one back through Joo Min-Kyu’s goal in the 73rd minute. A third goal for Vargas seemed to secure the win for Shanghai, but Ulsan’s dominance proved too much, leading them to victory. The match, refereed by Muhammad Nazmi Bin Nasaruddin from Malaysia, ended with a 3-2 scoreline in favor of Ulsan Hyundai FC. Statistics reflected Ulsan’s superiority in possession and shots on target (16 to 10), although Shanghai managed the same number of shots on target.
