Pumas Rout Cavalry FC in a Match Marked by Expulsions
Mexico City, February 14, 2025. UNAM Pumas routed Cavalry FC 2-0 in a CONCACAF Champions League first-round match played at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario, refereed by Juan Gabriel Calderón Pérez from Costa Rica. The game was marked by the Canadian team’s indiscipline, which ended with one player sent off and two booked in the first half.
Cavalry FC started the match with a solid defense, but suffered a blow when J. Herdman received a red card in the 45th minute. Before the expulsion, S. Camargo and C. Trafford had already received yellow cards (minutes 8 and 15 respectively). Despite being a man down, Cavalry FC held on until the end of the first half, where Pumas missed a penalty kick taken by I. Pussetto.
In the second half, Pumas took advantage of their numerical superiority. G. Martinez scored two goals, one in the 53rd minute and another in the 73rd, sealing the victory for the home side. Ball possession was overwhelmingly in favor of Pumas (74%), while Cavalry FC only had 26%. The Mexican team registered 23 shots (5 on target), 15 corners, and 9 fouls, while Cavalry FC only managed 3 shots (none on target), 2 corners and 9 fouls.
