América Edges Out Toluca in Tense Match
Club América secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Toluca in the Liga MX Apertura 2024 quarter-finals, played at the Estadio Nemesio Díez in Toluca de Lerdo. The match, officiated by César Ramos Palazuelos, was decided by a crucial own goal and a late strike.
The game was characterized by tension. América, with significantly less possession (34%), was outshot (7 to 17), but proved more clinical in front of goal. The opening goal arrived in the 49th minute via an own goal. However, Toluca dominated possession (66%) and created numerous chances. América’s response came in the 72nd minute with a goal from Henry Martín.
The match became even more challenging for Toluca after Fernando Pereira’s sending-off in the 85th minute following a second yellow card. Prior to this, Toluca already had three other players booked.
