Switzerland Overpowers Slovenia at St. Jakob-Park
Basel, September 8, 2025 – Switzerland demonstrated their dominance over Slovenia at St. Jakob-Park, securing a convincing victory in a World Cup Qualification match. The Swiss team, with 65% possession, controlled the tempo of the game from the start.
The scoring was opened in the 18th minute with a goal by N. Elvedi, assisted by R. Vargas. The Swiss pressure continued, and B. Embolo extended the lead in the 33rd minute, following an assist by F. Rieder. Before halftime, D. Ndoye practically sealed the match by scoring in the 38th minute, assisted by R. Freuler.
Despite Slovenia’s attempts to react, the Swiss defense remained solid, allowing only one shot on target out of Slovenia’s six attempts. Slovenia received two yellow cards during the match (Z. Karnicnik at 66′ and D. Petrovic at 70′), reflecting their frustration with Swiss dominance. The match ended with a clear victory for Switzerland, who added three valuable points on their road to the World Cup. Referee François Letexier from France officiated the match.
