Sturm Graz Suffers Shock Home Defeat to WSG Wattens
Graz, Austria – In a match full of emotions and twists, Sturm Graz suffered an unexpected defeat on their home turf, the Merkur-Arena, against WSG Wattens. The match, corresponding to the fourth matchday of the Austrian Bundesliga 2025, culminated in an adverse score for the home team.
Sturm Graz, who held a slight advantage in ball possession (51%), took the lead in the 38th minute thanks to a goal from J. Gorenc Stankovic, assisted by T. Horvat. However, the joy was short-lived. A crucial turning point came just before halftime when E. Aiwu was sent off with a red card in the 44th minute, leaving the home team with ten men.
After the break, WSG Wattens took advantage of their numerical superiority and equalized in the 53rd minute with a goal from N. Baden Frederiksen, assisted by M. Taferner. The visiting team continued to press, and M. Taferner again made his presence felt on the scoreboard, this time scoring a goal in the 67th minute with an assist from M. Wels, putting Wattens ahead. The final blow came in the 75th minute when M. Wels extended the lead, sealing a surprising victory for WSG Wattens.
Despite having fewer shots on target (3 against Wattens’ 8), Sturm Graz fought to the end, but could not reverse the situation. WSG Wattens, although they had less possession (49%), were more effective in front of goal, taking advantage of their opportunities and their rival’s numerical disadvantage. Referee Harald Lechner had a busy afternoon, showing numerous cards, including one red and five yellow.
