Sporting Gijón defeats Deportivo La Coruña in a thrilling match at El Molinón
Gijón, May 10, 2025.- Sporting Gijón defeated Deportivo La Coruña 2-1 in a match played at the Estadio Municipal El Molinón, corresponding to matchday 39 of the Segunda División. Despite Deportivo’s clear possession advantage (67%), Sporting showed greater effectiveness in attack.
The home side started strongly, scoring two goals in the first half. Nico Serrano opened the scoring in the 17th minute, assisted by Gaspar Campos. Before halftime, Nico Méndez extended the lead, assisted by Christian Gelabert Pina. The first half ended with yellow cards for Olaetxea of Sporting and Hernandez of Deportivo.
In the second half, Deportivo reacted and managed to pull one back thanks to a goal from Iker Barbero in the 61st minute. However, despite their territorial dominance and numerous shots (9 shots to Sporting’s 15), the Coruña team could not equalize. Sporting, in turn, received two more yellow cards. The match ended with a narrow victory for the home side, who added three important points in their fight for promotion. Despite the defeat, Deportivo La Coruña demonstrated a significantly superior ball possession.
