Arsenal Crushes Sporting CP in Lisbon Champions League Thriller
Lisbon, November 26, 2024 – Arsenal secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Sporting CP at the Estádio José Alvalade in a thrilling UEFA Champions League group stage match. Despite Sporting enjoying slightly more possession (53%), Arsenal proved far more clinical in front of goal.
The match started with a yellow card for Sporting’s Diomande in the 4th minute. Arsenal, however, quickly took control, with Martinelli opening the scoring in the 7th minute, assisted by Timber. Havertz doubled the lead in the 22nd minute, assisted by Saka. Gabriel added a third before halftime, assisted by Rice in the 45th minute.
Sporting pulled one back in the 47th minute through Inácio, assisted by Trincao, offering a brief flicker of hope. But Arsenal responded emphatically. Saka scored a penalty in the 65th minute, and Trossard added a late goal in the 82nd minute, assisted by Merino.
Arsenal had 12 shots on target (8 on goal), while Sporting managed 15 shots with 6 on target. Despite the defeat, Sporting displayed good possession and created several chances. The referee for the match was Szymon Marciniak (Poland). The victory puts Arsenal in a strong position in their Champions League group.
