Thrilling Draw Between Slovenia and Sweden in Ljubljana
Ljubljana, September 5, 2025 – Slovenia and Sweden played out a vibrant match at Stadion Stožice, in the group stage of European World Cup Qualification. The match, refereed by Spaniard José María Sánchez Martínez, ended in a draw that left a bittersweet taste for both teams.
Sweden took the lead in the 18th minute thanks to a goal by A. Elanga, assisted by Y. Ayari, showing a greater ball possession (59%). However, Slovenia reacted at the start of the second half with a goal from S. Lovric in the 46th minute. The intensity of the game resulted in several yellow cards, two for each team.
In the 73rd minute, Y. Ayari put Sweden back in the lead with a goal that seemed to seal the match. However, Slovenia, spurred on by their fans, managed the definitive equalizer in the 90th minute with a goal from Z. Vipotnik, assisted by B. Sesko, sealing the final 3-3. Despite having less possession (41%), Slovenia made better use of its opportunities, converting 3 of its 8 shots on goal. The match was characterized by a high number of fouls, 20 committed by Sweden and 19 by Slovenia.
