Shanghai Shenhua edged out Kawasaki Frontale with a narrow 1-0 victory at the Shanghai Stadium in a fiercely contested AFC Champions League 2024 Round of 16 match. The game, officiated by Salman Ahmad Falahi from Qatar, saw Kawasaki Frontale dominate possession (54%), but they lacked cutting edge in the final third. Shanghai Shenhua, with 46% possession, proved more clinical, although only two of their 13 shots were on target. The decisive goal arrived in the 76th minute, an own goal by K. Takai. While Kawasaki Frontale had a goal disallowed for offside in the 33rd minute, their lack of finishing and yellow cards to Marcinho and A. Sasaki (minutes 44 and 90 respectively) prevented them from finding an equalizer. Li Ke of Shanghai Shenhua also received a yellow card in the 5th minute. The match was a physical encounter, with Shanghai Shenhua committing 7 fouls and Kawasaki Frontale 16.
