Serbia Edges Out Austria in Thrilling Nations League Encounter
Belgrade, March 23, 2025 – Serbia secured a 2-0 victory over Austria in a dramatic UEFA Nations League playoff match at the Stadion Rajko Mitić. The game, officiated by José María Sánchez Martínez of Spain, was a tense affair marked by red and yellow cards.
Austria dominated possession (66%), but Serbia proved more clinical in front of goal. Despite a red card for Trauner in the 68th minute (along with a yellow card for Schlager), and yellow cards for Wimmer and Austria’s attempts to create chances with 12 shots (5 on target) were thwarted by a resolute Serbian defense.
Serbia took the lead in the 56th minute through a goal by Nikola Maksimović. A disallowed goal for Dusan Vlahovic in the 74th minute (for offside) kept the tension high until the final moments. Vlahovic ultimately secured the win for Serbia with a goal in the 90th minute, assisted by Luka Jovic. Serbia managed 12 shots (3 on target). Serbia also saw yellow cards to Maksimović and Mitrović.
