River Plate Dominates and Defeats Barcelona SC at the Monumental
River Plate triumphed over Barcelona SC by 1-0 on April 9th at the Estadio Mâs Monumental in a CONMEBOL Libertadores 2025 group stage match. The match, refereed by Raphael Claus from Brazil, saw clear dominance from the home side, who controlled 71% of possession. Despite numerous goal-scoring opportunities, River Plate only managed to score one goal, a missed penalty by Sebastián Driussi which ultimately found its way into the back of the net. The goal arrived early in the match, in the 6th minute.
Barcelona SC, on the other hand, barely threatened the opposing goal, with only two shots that went wide. The visiting team struggled against River Plate’s pressure and committed 16 fouls, while receiving one yellow card. River Plate, conversely, received three yellow cards throughout the match, displaying an intensity that didn’t always translate into fair play. Despite the significant difference in shots on target (7 for River compared to 0 for Barcelona), the scoreline reflected the home team’s lack of clinical finishing. The victory puts River Plate at the top of their group.
