Benfica Secures Victory in a Hard-Fought Match Against Rio Ave
Vila do Conde witnessed an intense match where Benfica prevailed over Rio Ave with a score of two to zero. The match, valid for the 18th round of the Primeira Liga, had moments of tension and controversy.
Benfica opened the scoring early, in the 16th minute, thanks to a goal by L. Barreiro after an assist from G. Sudakov. Benfica’s dominance of the ball, with 64% possession, translated into numerous scoring opportunities, although only seven of their 23 shots were on target.
The lead was extended in the 25th minute with an own goal by A. Ntoi. Rio Ave tried to react, but their efforts were thwarted by a solid Benfica defense and a lack of precision in their shots. Of their seven shots, only one was on target.
The second half was marked by intensity and cards. A. Schjelderup of Benfica and A. Ntoi of Rio Ave received yellow cards in the 61st and 66th minutes, respectively. In addition, a goal by Clayton for Rio Ave was disallowed for offside in the 69th minute, further complicating the home team’s aspirations. The match concluded with a yellow card for S. Dahl of Benfica in the 90th minute.
Despite the defeat, Rio Ave showed grit, although it was not enough to overcome a Benfica side that knew how to take advantage of their opportunities and maintain control of the match.
