Newcastle Delivers Historic Thrashing to Qarabag in Baku
Baku, February 18, 2026 – Newcastle United unleashed an offensive storm at the Tofiq Bəhramov Stadium, crushing Qarabag with a resounding scoreline. The match, part of the Round of 32 of the UEFA Champions League, turned into a display of power by the English side, who dominated the game from the opening whistle.
Just three minutes in, A. Gordon opened the scoring with a goal following an assist from D. Burn. Qarabag’s defense had barely recovered from the blow when M. Thiaw, with the help of K. Trippier, extended the lead five minutes later. A. Gordon continued his scoring recital, netting two more goals, one from a penalty, in the 32nd and 33rd minutes. Before halftime, Gordon completed his hat-trick, converting another penalty in the 45th minute.
Qarabag tried to react in the second half, and E. Cafarquliyev managed to pull one back in the 54th minute, assisted by A. Zoubir. However, Newcastle’s defense remained solid and J. Murphy sealed the game with a goal in the 72nd minute.
Newcastle dominated possession with 57% compared to Qarabag’s 43%. The English side also outshot their rivals, with 22 shots compared to Qarabag’s 8. Norwegian referee Espen Eskas cautioned M. Thiaw of Newcastle. Despite the goal and their insistance, Qarabag couldn’t stand against Newcastle’s overwhelming force.
