Lyon crushes Qarabag in a thrilling Baku encounter
Olympique Lyonnais secured a resounding 4-1 victory over Qarabag FK in a UEFA Europa League Group Stage matchday five clash at the Tofiq Bəhramov adına Respublika stadionu in Baku. The match, officiated by Nenad Minaković from Serbia, saw Lyon dominate offensively despite lower possession (44%).
Mikautadze opened the scoring in the 15th minute, assisted by Nuamah. After the break, Tolisso extended the lead in the 63rd minute, assisted by Veretout. Fofana (68′) and Mikautadze (80′) added further goals, assisted by Benrahma and Maitland-Niles respectively. Juninho scored a penalty for Qarabag in the 87th minute.
Despite the loss, Qarabag controlled 56% of possession and had 13 shots, though only two were on target. Lyon was more clinical, with 16 shots and 10 on target. The match was a physical encounter, with Lyon committing 14 fouls and Qarabag 8. Maitland-Niles and Tagliafico received yellow cards for Lyon.
