North Carolina Courage Edged Out Portland Thorns in Close Contest
Portland, Oregon – The North Carolina Courage secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Portland Thorns at Providence Park in a NWSL regular season match. Despite the Thorns registering more shots (16 to 14), the Courage controlled possession (58%) and proved more clinical in front of goal.
The match was a closely contested affair with both teams battling for midfield dominance. A yellow card to D. Castellanos in the 50th minute was the only significant disciplinary incident in a goalless first half. The decisive goal arrived in the 75th minute when Jessica Shaw scored from the rebound after missing a penalty, giving her team the win. Despite the Thorns’ eight corner kicks and their late efforts to equalize, the Courage held on for the victory. The Courage’s superior possession and five shots on target, compared to the Thorns’ two, highlight their efficiency.
