Olympiakos Edges Out Panathinaikos in Thrilling Encounter
Olympiakos Piraeus defeated Panathinaikos 4-2 in a thrilling match played at the Stadio Georgios Karaiskáki in Piraeus. The game, the first matchday of the 2024 Greek Super League 1 Championship Round, was marked by intensity and a fluctuating scoreline.
The home side started strongly, scoring two early goals thanks to R. Yaremchuk (1st minute) and Chiquinho (16th minute). However, Panathinaikos responded with a goal from F. Mladenovic in the 25th minute, narrowing the gap before halftime.
The second half continued with the same excitement. Yaremchuk scored his second goal of the match in the 51st minute, extending Olympiakos’ lead. Panathinaikos again reduced the deficit with a penalty converted by F. Ioannidis in the 75th minute. In a frenetic finish, C. Kostoulas scored for Olympiakos in the 83rd minute, sealing the victory for the home side despite the previous Panathinaikos goal. The match ended with a red card for Panathinaikos’ Ioannidis in the 90th minute.
Despite a relatively even possession (49% for Olympiakos and 51% for Panathinaikos), Olympiakos was more effective in attack, with 12 shots (8 on target) compared to Panathinaikos’ 8 (3 on target). The referee was Rade Obrenovič from Slovenia.
