Newell’s Old Boys defeated Independiente 2-1 in a thrilling match at the Estadio Marcelo Alberto Bielsa in Rosario. The game, part of the 24th round of the 2024 Argentine Professional League’s second phase, was characterized by its intensity and yellow cards.
Newell’s took an early lead with a penalty goal from Ezequiel Banega in the 5th minute. However, the lead was short lived for Newell’s, as both Banega and A. Mendez received yellow cards in the first half (minutes 13 and 30 respectively). Independiente also saw yellow cards for D. Segovia and J. Laso in the 41st and 45th minutes.
In the second half, J. Garcia extended Newell’s lead in the 48th minute. Independiente fought back and received another yellow card in the 49th minute (S. Hidalgo). In the closing stages, A. Canelo scored a consolation goal for Independiente in the 90th minute, assisted by L. Millan. The match ended with a 2-1 victory for Newell’s Old Boys. T. Perez of Newell’s received a yellow card in the 90th minute.
Despite the loss, Independiente dominated possession (65%) and had more shots (15 to Newell’s 10), although the shot accuracy was similar for both teams (6 shots on target each). Newell’s, however, made the most of their chances and secured the three points.
