Cerro Porteño Thrashes Monagas SC in Maturín
Cerro Porteño achieved a resounding 4-0 victory over Monagas SC at the Estadio Monumental de Maturín in the second round of the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores. The match, refereed by Dario Herrera from Argentina, took place on February 20, 2025.
From the outset, Cerro Porteño controlled possession (64%) and created numerous scoring chances. In the 14th minute, Chico opened the scoring with an assist from C. Dominguez. A. G. Benítez extended the lead in the 33rd minute, assisted by J. Torres. Before halftime, C. Dominguez added a third goal (45′), also assisted by J. Torres. In the second half, W. Viera sealed the victory with a goal in the 64th minute, again assisted by J. Torres.
Monagas SC, with only 36% possession, tried to react but were outmatched by Cerro Porteño’s efficiency. The game was marked by several cautions: R. Manrique and J. Lovera received yellow cards for Monagas, while Chico and W. Viera received yellow cards for Cerro Porteño. Furthermore, O. Piris was sent off with a red card in the 37th minute for Monagas. Despite their efforts, Monagas failed to put any of their seven shots on target. Cerro Porteño, on the other hand, had 15 shots, 8 of them on target.
