Mexico Dominates But Not Enough: 2-0 Victory Against Saudi Arabia in Gold Cup Quarterfinals
Glendale, June 29, 2025 – The Mexican national team defeated Saudi Arabia with a score of 2-0 at State Farm Stadium, securing their passage to the Gold Cup semi-finals. Despite territorial dominance and clear scoring opportunities, El Tri did not achieve a more resounding victory that reflected their superiority on the field.
The first goal came in the 50th minute, when Alexis Vega converted an offensive play. The second goal was an own goal by Ali Madu in the 81st minute.
Mexico controlled the match with 60% possession, generating 14 shots, 5 of which were on target. However, the lack of finishing in front of goal and the tough Saudi defense prevented a wider victory. The Mexican team committed 18 fouls and received a yellow card for Jesús Gallardo.
Saudi Arabia, with only 40% possession and a single shot that did not find the net, showed a defensive attitude. The Saudis committed 11 fouls and received two yellow cards (Abdulrahman Majrashi and Zakaria Al Johani). Despite the defeat, the Asian team fought to the end.
The Mexican national team advances to the Gold Cup semi-finals but must improve their effectiveness in front of goal if they want to aspire to the title.
