Marítimo Secures Victory in Incident-Packed Match Against Penafiel
Funchal, Portugal – In a match held at the Estádio do Marítimo, Marítimo claimed victory over Penafiel in a game marked by intensity and controversy. The final score reflects a hard-fought encounter where both teams battled fiercely, although cards and refereeing disputes also played a significant role.
Marítimo opened the scoring early, in the 5th minute, with a goal by M. Tejon following a well-constructed play. The match turned physical with several yellow cards shown to both sides, starting with one for Iano Imbene of Penafiel in the 28th minute, followed by one for N. Madsen of Marítimo in the 33rd minute. A turning point came in the 40th minute with the sending off of I. Kebe from Penafiel, seemingly tilting the balance in favor of the home team.
However, Penafiel demonstrated resilience and managed to equalize in the 44th minute through a penalty converted by Reko. The second half brought more excitement. In the 52nd minute, Carlos Daniel of Marítimo scored a goal, seemingly giving his team the definitive lead. However, the joy was short-lived, as a goal from Penafiel was disallowed after a VAR review in the 64th minute.
The end of the match was fraught with tension, with more yellow cards and continuous interruptions. Despite the numerical advantage for much of the game, Marítimo failed to extend their lead, and Penafiel, although combative, could not reverse the score. The refereeing, overseen by Helder Filipe Claudio Carvalho, was the subject of debate, especially regarding the VAR decision and the strictness with the cards.
