Own Goal Decides Tight Match in Ambato: Deportivo Cuenca Edges Out Macará
Ambato, Ecuador – In a hard-fought match at the Estadio Bellavista, Deportivo Cuenca secured a narrow 1 to 0 victory over Macará. The game, part of the Liga Pro 2025 Placement Group – Round 9, was defined by its intensity and midfield battles.
Despite having a slight advantage in possession (52% against 48%), Deportivo Cuenca struggled to create clear scoring opportunities, managing just one shot on target out of a total of seven. Macará, on the other hand, attempted to be more incisive with 13 shots, although only five were directed towards the goal.
The only goal of the match came in the 40th minute, courtesy of an own goal by J. Marrufo of Macará, following an unfortunate play in the area. The first half also saw a yellow card for L. Gustavino of Deportivo Cuenca in the 37th minute.
The second half continued with a similar rhythm, characterized by numerous fouls (16 by Deportivo Cuenca and 13 by Macará) and yellow cards. Deportivo Cuenca added three more bookings to their tally (L. Estupinan, C. Luna Tobar, M. Maccari), while J. Marrufo of Macará also received a yellow card in added time. Referee Yerson Zambrano had a busy night controlling a tense match. Macara tried to change the course of the match with several modifications to their lineup. Ball control was fairly divided throughout the match, with slight advantages for both sides. Despite their efforts, Macara couldn’t overturn the score and went home without points.
