Netherlands Defeats Lithuania in a Goal-Filled Match in Kaunas
In a thrilling encounter held at the S. Dariaus ir S. Girėno stadionas in Kaunas, the Netherlands triumphed over Lithuania in a World Cup – Qualification Europe match. The Dutch dominance was evident from the start, reflected in a 77% possession rate. Memphis Depay opened the scoring for the visitors in the 11th minute with a fine finish after an assist from Cody Gakpo. Jurriën Timber extended the lead in the 33rd minute. However, Lithuania surprisingly responded before halftime, with goals from Gvidas Gineitis in the 36th minute, assisted by Justas Lasickas, and Edvinas Girdvainis in the 43rd minute, assisted by Gineitis himself.
In the second half, Depay scored again in the 64th minute, following an assist by Denzel Dumfries, sealing the victory for the Netherlands. Despite their lower possession (23%), Lithuania proved to be a tough opponent, making the most of their opportunities. The match was intense, with a total of 11 fouls committed by Lithuania and 10 by the Netherlands. Justas Lasickas and Paulius Golubickas were shown yellow cards for the home side. The Netherlands created more danger in attack, with 14 total shots (7 on target) compared to Lithuania’s 4 (3 on target).
