River Plate Dominates in Asunción Despite Scoreless Draw
Asunción, Paraguay – In a match held at the Estadio Tigo La Huerta, River Plate displayed overwhelming dominance over Libertad Asunción in the first leg of the CONMEBOL Libertadores 2025 Round of 16. Despite a high ball possession (67%) and a considerable number of shots on goal (19 in total, with 6 on target), the Argentinian team failed to translate their superiority into goals.
Libertad Asunción, playing at home, was largely outmatched, settling for 33% possession and limiting their attacks to 8 shots, of which only 2 were directed at the goal. The Paraguayan team resorted to fouls (9 in total) to halt River’s advance, receiving three yellow cards in the process. Despite the constant pressure, they managed to keep a clean sheet. Referee Wilton Pereira Sampaio, from Brazil, had a busy night calling several fouls.
The match ended goalless, leaving the series open for the return leg, where River Plate will seek to materialize their dominance on the scoreboard.
