Kuwait suffered a dramatic comeback in their match against Iraq, played at the Basra International Stadium in Basra on March 20, 2025. Despite a 2-0 lead for Kuwait thanks to goals from Y. Naser (minutes 39′ and 70′), Iraq managed to mount a comeback in the dying minutes of the match, scoring two goals in injury time, by A. Hashem and I. Bayesh (minute 90′), to win 3-2. The match, corresponding to the 7th matchday of the 3rd round of the Asian qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup, was marked by tension and a red card for Kuwait’s A. Al Fadhli in the 90th minute. Iraq dominated possession (63%), while Kuwait proved more efficient on goal shots, despite a huge difference in the total number of attempts. A total of 10 yellow cards and one red card were shown, reflecting the intensity of the game.
