Late Penalty Seals Draw in Porto Alegre: Internacional and Corinthians Split Points
Porto Alegre witnessed a vibrant and controversial match between Internacional and Corinthians, which ended in a 1 to 1 draw at the Estádio José Pinheiro Borda. The match, corresponding to matchday 26 of the Brazilian Serie A, was marked by intensity, refereeing decisions, and a dramatic finish.
Corinthians took an early lead in the 10th minute with a goal from Gui Negao, assisted by Matheuzinho. However, “Timao’s” joy was dampened by the annulment of a goal by Hugo for offside, after VAR review, in the 27th minute. The first half was also characterized by a series of yellow cards, including one for Internacional player O. Romero.
The second half continued in the same vein, with more yellow cards for both teams. VAR was once again the protagonist, disallowing another goal, this time for Internacional due to an offside by O. Romero at minute 40 of the first half. Frustration grew in “Colorado,” who, despite dominating possession of the ball with 56%, could not find the way to score.
Just when it seemed that Corinthians would take the victory, a foul inside the area in stoppage time gave Internacional the opportunity to tie the match. J. Carbonero did not miss from the penalty spot, sealing the final 1 to 1 draw. The end of the match was chaotic, with several more yellow cards and a red card for Corinthians coach Dorival Junior for protesting.
Despite favorable ball possession, Internacional failed to capitalize on their opportunities, while Corinthians defended tooth and nail, although the refereeing controversy and discipline were determining factors in the final result.
