Greece and Scotland play out a Thrilling Draw at Georgios Karaiskakis Stadium
Piraeus witnessed a thrilling encounter between Greece and Scotland, ending in a draw that left fans on the edge of their seats. The match, part of the European World Cup Qualification group stage, was played in an electrifying atmosphere.
Greece opened the scoring early, in the 7th minute, with a goal from Bakasetas, giving the home side an initial lead. However, the game was interrupted by several yellow cards, two for Scotland in the first half, highlighting the intensity of the match. Greece extended their lead in the second half with goals from Karetsas (57′) and Tzolis (63′), seeming to be heading towards a comfortable victory.
Scotland, however, showed their fighting spirit and responded with two quick goals from Doak (65′) and Christie (70′), leveling the score and temporarily silencing the home crowd. The match became even more dramatic when Bakasetas received a second yellow card and, consequently, a red card in the 84th minute, leaving Greece with ten players. Despite being a man down, Greece withstood the Scottish pressure until the end.
The match ended with a balanced possession (50% for each team), although Greece was more incisive in attack with 18 total shots, 10 of them on target, compared to Scotland’s 11 shots (6 on target). Spanish referee Jesus Gil Manzano showed a total of five yellow cards (two for Greece and three for Scotland) and one red card (for Bakasetas).
