Sporting CP Edges GIL Vicente in Tense Taça de Portugal Clash
Sporting CP secured a hard-fought victory over GIL Vicente in the Taça de Portugal quarter-finals, played at the Estádio Cidade de Barcelos on February 27th, 2025. The match, officiated by Claudio Filipe Ruivo Pereira, was a tense affair characterized by numerous cards.
Sporting CP controlled possession (57%) and created more scoring opportunities (9 shots, 4 on target), although they also missed several chances. The only goal of the game came in the 68th minute, scored by Z. Debast, assisted by V. Gyokeres. GIL Vicente, with 43% possession and 8 shots (4 on target), struggled to convert their chances. An offside goal disallowed in the 88th minute further hampered their efforts.
GIL Vicente saw three players booked in the first half alone, and finished the match with four yellow cards and one red card. Sporting CP also received three yellow cards. Despite their numerical advantage in the final stages, Sporting CP couldn’t extend their lead. However, the victory secures their passage to the Taça de Portugal semi-finals.
