Gangwon FC Stages Thrilling Comeback Against Shanghai Shenhua in Chuncheon
Chuncheon, South Korea – Gangwon FC secured an important home victory against Shanghai Shenhua in a match played at Chuncheon Songam Stadium. The game, part of the AFC Champions League group stage, ended with a score of 2 to 1 in favor of the home team, following a comeback that left fans breathless.
Shanghai Shenhua took the lead just before halftime, in the 45th minute, with a goal from J. Teixeira assisted by Gao Tianyi. It seemed the Chinese team would head into the locker room with an advantage, but Gangwon FC didn’t give up.
In the second half, the Korean team came out with a renewed attitude and dominated possession, reaching 63%. Gangwon FC’s persistence paid off in the 54th minute when Hong Chul equalized the match with a goal assisted by Goo Bon-Cheul. Just ten minutes later, in the 63rd, Goo Bon-Cheul became the hero of the match by scoring the winning goal.
Despite having less possession (37%) and fewer shots on goal (2 vs 3), Shanghai Shenhua tried to react, but encountered a solid Gangwon FC defense. The match was intense, with a total of 26 fouls (14 for Gangwon FC and 12 for Shanghai Shenhua) and two yellow cards for the Chinese team, showing the toughness of the encounter. Ultimately, Gangwon FC took all three points in their AFC Champions League debut.
