Last-Minute Penalty Stuns Fulham as Southampton Snatch a Draw
London, England – A match overwhelmingly dominated by Fulham in possession and shots ended in a 1-1 draw against Southampton at Craven Cottage. The FA Cup Round of 16 clash saw Fulham control the ball with 68% possession and create a host of scoring opportunities, totaling 23 shots, 6 of which were on target. Fulham also dominated corner kicks, accumulating 15 compared to Southampton’s 4.
However, Fulham’s lack of clinical finishing and a persistent Southampton defense kept the scoreline tight. Southampton’s tactical discipline, although with less control of the game (32% possession), was evident. The team suffered several yellow cards, including F. Downes, F. Azaz, and K. Matsuki, reflecting the intensity with which they contested every ball. J. Cuenca of Fulham and S. Chukwueze also received a yellow card.
In the final minute of regulation time, a penalty awarded to Southampton was converted by R. Stewart, leveling the score and silencing the home crowd. This goal, coming seemingly out of nowhere, left Fulham with a bitter taste after a match where their dominance did not translate into victory. Australian referee Jarred Gillett officiated the match.
