Racing Club Triumphs Over Fortaleza in Thrilling Libertadores Clash
Fortaleza, Ceará – In a thrilling match played at the Estádio Governador Plácido Aderaldo Castelo, Racing Club defeated Fortaleza EC 3-0 in the opening match of the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage. The match, refereed by Juan Gabriel Benítez from Paraguay, was characterized by intensity and Racing Club’s offensive dominance.
Racing Club took the lead early with a goal from Maxi Salas in the 26th minute, assisted by Nicolás Colombo. Despite yellow cards for Di Cesare and Salas in the 37th and 45th minutes respectively, Racing Club maintained a strong attacking presence. Before half-time, the Academy extended their advantage with a goal from Aníbal Ezequiel Almendra in the 49th minute.
In the second half, Fortaleza attempted a comeback, but Racing Club’s defense held firm. Although Fortaleza had more possession (58%), with 14 shots (4 on target), Racing Club was more clinical, generating 24 shots (13 on target). The superiority in shots on target was reflected in the scoreline with a third goal, scored by Santiago Sosa in the 84th minute, assisted by Gabriel Rojas.
Despite numerous cautions for Racing Club players and a yellow card for a Fortaleza player, the Academy’s victory was convincing. The statistics reflect Racing Club’s greater efficiency despite lower possession. The win puts Racing Club at the top of the group at the start of the competition.
