Fluminense Edges Past Vasco da Gama in Heated Carioca Derby
Rio de Janeiro – In a tense match filled with yellow cards, Fluminense managed to defeat Vasco da Gama in the first leg of the Copa Do Brasil semi-finals. The game, played in Rio de Janeiro, ended with a score that favored Fluminense, thanks to an own goal by Paulo Henrique in the 36th minute.
The match was characterized by a contested midfield battle, reflected in the numerous fouls committed by both teams: 17 by Fluminense and 12 by Vasco da Gama. The referee, Wilton Pereira Sampaio, didn’t hesitate to show yellow cards, sanctioning five Fluminense players (Samuel Xavier, L. Acosta, Nonato, K. Serna, and A. Canobbio) and three Vasco da Gama players (C. A. Gomez, C. Cuesta, and Paulo Henrique himself).
Despite having less ball possession (47% against Vasco da Gama’s 53%), Fluminense managed to be effective in attack, although they only managed to get 3 of their 11 shots on target. Vasco da Gama, on the other hand, created more offensive opportunities, with 14 shots, 6 of which were on target, but they failed to convert.
