FC Basel edges past FC Lugano in thrilling encounter
FC Basel defeated FC Lugano 4-3 in a dramatic match at the Stadio di Cornaredo in Lugano on May 10th, 2025. The game, part of the second round of the Swiss Super League Championship round, was marked by the expulsion of Basel’s Ajeti and a flurry of yellow cards for both teams.
Lugano took the early lead with a goal from U. Bislimi in the 3rd minute, but Ajeti equalized for Basel just two minutes later. The excitement exploded in the second half with three goals from Basel: two from Xherdan Shaqiri (48th and 51st minutes) and one from Leroy (61st minute). Despite Ajeti’s red card in the 42nd minute for a second yellow, Basel controlled much of the game. Lugano managed to pull one back with a penalty from Grgic in the 69th minute. However, a late goal from Lugano reduced the final margin to a thrilling 4-3, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Basel victory. Despite the loss, Lugano held 66% of possession.
