Cerro Porteño defeats Melgar in a hard-fought match in Arequipa
Arequipa, Peru – Cerro Porteño defeated FBC Melgar 2-0 in a thrilling match played at the Estadio de la Universidad Nacional San Agustín, corresponding to the 3rd round of the 2025 CONMEBOL Libertadores. The match, refereed by Piero Maza from Chile, was characterized by Melgar’s greater possession of the ball (65%), but Cerro Porteño’s effectiveness in finishing.
The first goal arrived in the 22nd minute after a missed penalty by C. Domínguez, who curiously assisted himself for a subsequent goal. The second goal came in the 34th minute, this time through a successfully converted penalty by R. Piris.
Despite FBC Melgar’s territorial dominance, with 17 shots (5 on target), Cerro Porteño’s strong defense frustrated their attempts to score. Melgar accumulated 10 corners and one yellow card, while Cerro Porteño received 2 yellow cards. The match was interrupted by numerous fouls, with 11 from Melgar and 10 from Cerro Porteño.
