Faroe Islands Deliver Resounding Defeat to Montenegro in World Cup Qualifier
Tórshavn, Streymoy – The Faroe Islands delivered a dominant performance at home, overcoming Montenegro with a score of 4 to 0 in the group stage match of the European qualification for the World Cup. The match, played at Tórsvøllur, was refereed by Spaniard Javier Alberola Rojas.
From the beginning, the Faroe Islands showed their determination, opening the scoring in the 16th minute with a goal by H. Sorensen, assisted by A. Frederiksberg. The home pressure continued and A. Frederiksberg extended the lead in the 36th minute, taking the game to halftime with a favorable score of 2 to 0.
In the second half, the Faroe Islands maintained control. H. Sorensen scored again in the 55th minute, increasing the difference on the scoreboard. The icing on the cake came in the 71st minute, when A. Frederiksberg converted a penalty, sealing his team’s victory.
Despite Montenegro dominating ball possession with 60% compared to the Faroe Islands’ 40%, they failed to transform this superiority into clear scoring chances. Montenegro took 9 shots, of which only 3 were on target, while the Faroe Islands, with 14 shots (7 on target), demonstrated greater effectiveness in front of goal. The Montenegrin team received two yellow cards during the match.
The Faroe Islands celebrated an important victory on their way to World Cup qualification, while Montenegro will have to rethink their strategy for the upcoming matches.
