Excelsior Suffers Agonizing Home Defeat Against Sparta Rotterdam
Rotterdam, September 14, 2025 – In a hard-fought match at Stadion Woudestein, Excelsior was defeated by Sparta Rotterdam with a goal in the final minutes. The home team dominated possession with 53% compared to Sparta’s 47%, but failed to translate its dominance into goals.
The match was characterized by physical and tactical play, evidenced by the number of cards shown by referee Jeroen Manschot. Excelsior suffered the dismissal of A. Zagre, in addition to accumulating four other yellow cards. Sparta Rotterdam, on the other hand, only received one warning.
Despite generating a similar number of scoring opportunities (17 shots for Excelsior against 18 for Sparta Rotterdam), the effectiveness in front of goal was the key difference. Sparta Rotterdam managed to convert one of their chances at the end of the match, thanks to a goal by A. Oufkir with an assist from P. van Aanholt, sealing the victory for the visitors.
