Ecuador thrashes Venezuela in Quito with an inspired Enner Valencia
Quito, March 21, 2025 – In a vibrant match played at the Estadio Rodrigo Paz Delgado, Ecuador defeated Venezuela 3-1 in the thirteenth round of the South American qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Enner Valencia was the figure of the match, scoring two goals, although he missed a penalty. The match was a clear Ecuadorian dominance, reflected in ball possession (71%) and superiority in shots on goal (6 to 6). Valencia opened the scoring in the 39th minute with an assist from Vite, and extended the lead at the start of the second half. Venezuela scored a consolation goal in injury time with a goal from José Caicedo, but it was too late for a comeback. The referee of the match was Abel Ramon Abatti from Brazil.
