Guaraní Snatch Agonizing Draw Against Universidad de Chile at La Nueva Olla
Asunción, Paraguay – In a dramatic match played at Estadio ueno La Nueva Olla, Club Guaraní and Universidad de Chile drew 2-1 in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana Play-offs. The match, refereed by Brazilian Raphael Claus, left a bittersweet taste for the Chileans, who saw a lead obtained in the first half vanish in the final minutes.
Universidad de Chile took the lead in the 17th minute thanks to a goal by L. Assadi, who took advantage of an assist from L. Di Yorio to beat the home goalkeeper. The Chilean team dominated possession of the ball for most of the match (56%), although they could not capitalize on their superiority with more goals. Guaraní, for their part, tried to react, but found a well-positioned defense. The first half ended with a minimal advantage for the visitors.
In the second half, Guaraní came out with renewed energy in search of the equalizer. However, a lack of precision in the final touch prevented them from completing their attacks. The local pressure intensified in the final minutes and finally paid off. R. Torales, in the 84th minute, tied the score with an assist from A. J. Benitez Cabrera. The same Torales, in the 89th minute, sealed the definitive draw after a pass from L. Martinez, unleashing euphoria in the stands.
Guaraní finished with 44% possession, 17 shots (5 on target) and 6 corners, while Universidad de Chile recorded 11 shots (5 on target) and 4 corners. The match was hard-fought, with 12 fouls committed by Guaraní (one yellow card for P. Riveros) and 11 by Universidad de Chile.
