Bolívar Secures Victory in Cusco Amidst Card-Heavy Match
Cusco, Peru – In a hard-fought match at the Estadio Inca Garcilaso de la Vega, Bolívar defeated Cienciano in the Round of 16 of the CONMEBOL Sudamericana. Ecuadorian referee Augusto Bergelio Aragon Bautista had a busy night, brandishing numerous yellow cards to both teams.
The match began with intensity, and Cienciano dominated possession with 57%. However, Bolívar capitalized on their opportunities. In the 15th minute, Martín Cauteruccio opened the scoring for Bolívar from the penalty spot. Cienciano tried to respond, but Bolívar’s defense stood firm. Just before halftime, in the 45th minute, Diego Batallini extended Bolívar’s lead with a goal assisted by Robson Matheus.
In the second half, Cienciano continued to press and create opportunities, accumulating a total of 18 shots, although only 5 were on target. However, their lack of precision and Bolívar’s solid defense prevented them from scoring. The match was characterized by a high number of fouls (16 by Cienciano and 14 by Bolívar) and cautions. Cienciano received five yellow cards, while Bolívar was cautioned three times. Despite dominating possession and having more shots, Cienciano was unable to convert their chances into goals, and Bolívar secured a valuable victory in Cusco.
