Cerro Porteño Edges Out Sporting Cristal in Thrilling Encounter
Asunción, Paraguay – Cerro Porteño defeated Sporting Cristal 2-1 in a thrilling CONMEBOL Libertadores group stage match played at the Estadio Defensores del Chaco on April 25th, 2025. The game was a back-and-forth affair right until the final whistle.
Sporting Cristal controlled possession (55%), but Cerro Porteño proved more clinical in attack, registering 25 shots on goal (9 on target). Cerro Porteño took the lead through a goal by Claudio Domínguez (42’) assisted by Alan Benítez, and extended their advantage with a strike from Federico Carrizo (44’), assisted by Domínguez.
Sporting Cristal pulled one back in the dying minutes with a goal from Rafael Lutiger (90’), assisted by Horacio Caparo, but it was too little too late. The match was a tense affair, with a total of 11 yellow cards shown to both teams: three to Cerro Porteño (W. Viera, M. Pérez, and C. Domínguez) and four to Sporting Cristal (R. Lutiger, F. Romero, M. Tavara).
