Cambridge United defeats Stockport County in a thrilling match
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire – Cambridge United triumphed over Stockport County with a 2-0 victory in an exciting match at the Cledara Abbey Stadium this Friday, February 22nd, corresponding to matchday 33 of League One. Despite having less possession (40% vs 60%), the home side proved more clinical in front of goal.
The match was defined by a brace from J. Stokes, who scored in the 9th and 43rd minutes, assisted by L. Bennett and J. Brophy respectively. These early goals put Stockport County on the back foot, who, despite creating more chances (18 shots to Cambridge’s 5), failed to overcome the resolute home defense.
The second half was punctuated by a series of cautions and a sending off for Stockport County, with C. Connolly receiving three yellow cards, the last resulting in his expulsion. P. Digby of Cambridge United also received a yellow card. Despite Stockport’s territorial dominance, a lack of precision in their finishing and the solidity of the Cambridge United defense prevented a comeback. The match ended in a convincing victory for the home team.
